Beandri Booysen's life was a shining example of resilience, love, and the remarkable strength of a positive spirit. Even while battling a rare and devastating illness, she exuded a joy that left an indelible mark on countless lives. Now, heartbreakingly, her journey has ended—just days before Christmas.
At only 19 years old, Beandri's life has come to a close, but her legacy will continue to inspire everyone who learns of her story.
Hailing from South Africa, Beandri was just seven months old when she was diagnosed with Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome, a rare genetic condition that causes the body to age at a rate eight times faster than normal.
The odds of being born with progeria are 1 in 4 million, and fewer than 400 children and young adults worldwide currently live with the condition. Doctors didn’t expect Beandri to survive beyond her early teens. But Beandri had other plans.
A life lived to the fullest
From the moment she found her voice, Beandri refused to let her condition define who she was. Though she weighed only 12 kilograms (26 pounds) and carried the physical burdens of her illness, her spirit knew no bounds.
She went to school, dreamed of becoming a teacher, and envisioned a future where she’d marry and raise twins. Determined to embrace life like any other teenager, she treasured every moment with unwavering joy and courage.
On social media, Beandri found her voice. Her TikTok account, where she posted motivational videos and candid glimpses into her life, quickly gained nearly 300,000 followers.
Her motto, “Be yourself. Love yourself. Believe in yourself,” resonated with people around the world. Through her posts, she not only shared her experiences but also educated others about progeria, spreading awareness and compassion.
A mother’s heartbreak
Just weeks after celebrating her 19th birthday, Beandri Booysen faced a sudden and devastating health crisis.
“Please pray. Beandri’s heart stopped,” her mother, Bea, shared on Wednesday. “They are trying to get her heart to beat again. Please pray.”
On December 18, Bea announced the heartbreaking news that her daughter had passed away.
In a message filled with deep sorrow and immense pride, Bea described Beandri as a “vibrant personality” and the “last surviving person in South Africa with Progeria.”
“She was a voice and a symbol of awareness for Progeria and other special needs,” Bea wrote. “She never stopped fighting.”
Tributes poured in on TikTok as the news of Beandri’s passing spread.
“Rest in peace, my sweetheart friend. I will miss you a lot,” one person shared.
Countless others expressed their grief, offering heartfelt condolences to Beandri’s family and loved ones.
Her lasting, final message
Beandri’s time on this earth was far too brief, yet she made every moment count, reminding us all of what truly matters. She taught us to embrace life fully, love deeply, and find beauty in each day. Her infectious laughter, unwavering optimism, and determination to uplift others will forever remain in our hearts.
While her family has requested privacy during this painful time, one thing is undeniable: Beandri’s light will continue to shine brightly through the countless lives she touched.
As we reflect on her story, may it serve as a powerful reminder to cherish the moments we’re given and to approach life with the same courage and joy that Beandri radiated every single day.
